The Falkirk Wheel

Falkirk Wheel

"What is it?"  most people say when they see a photo of The Falkirk Wheel - basically it's a rotating boat lift, in fact it is the world's first and only rotating boat lift!

The Forth & Clyde Canal was first completed in 1790, followed 32 years later by the Union Canal in 1822 connecting with the Forth & Clyde at Falkirk. At the time this was an essential passenger and cargo highway across central Scotland. However, by the late 1800's railways began to take over as the main means of transport and real canal activity declined. However, thanks to an increased interest in water holidays, and the £84.5million Millennium Link Project, it was decided to reconnect the Union Canal with the Forth & Clyde Canal, re-establishing east to west coast access for boats.

The problem of linking two canals with water levels 115ft apart had been solved originally by using 11 locks - which took half a day to traverse! The Falkirk Wheel moves a wee bit faster than that; approximately fifteen minutes between one canal and another!

Boat trips:

The Falkirk Wheel Boat Trips run every half hour from 9.30am to 5.00pm in season and up to 3.00pm winter.

Trips last about 60 minutes. Visitors should arrive at least 30 minutes before the allocated trip time, in order to collect pre booked tickets and allow time to board the boat.
See their web site for up to date prices of boat trips - entry to the visitor centre, gift shop and cafe is free -  so you can see The Falkirk Wheel for free!

The ascent takes approximately 15 minutes and lifts the boat up to join the Union Canal 35m above your starting point. You then pass along the aqueduct, through the 180 metre Roughcastle Tunnel and under the historic Antonine Wall. The trip up and down the wheel is very smooth as the massive structure moves slowly allowing you time to savour the experience.

You don't have to go on the boat if you don't want to - it's free to stand and stare as others take the 35m trip up top.
