Castles in the western highlands of Scotland - what would Scotland be without its castles. Here in the western highlands there are castles still lived in like Inveraray Castle and those castles which have seen better days like Kilchurn Castle but are still incredibly romantic and evocative.

Castle Campbell or Castle Gloom. Once stronghold of the clan Campbell. The castle was the lowland stronghold of the Campbell earls of Argyll who were seldom far from the major political and religious events of late medieval Scotland

Castle Stalker  late 14th century castle, seat of Stewarts of Appin sits on a tiny island in Loch Linnhe near Appin north of Oban. Remember Monty Python and the Holy Grail? Castle Stalker appears in it.

Dunstaffnage Castle. Ruins of 13th century castle. Built before 1275 on a huge rock overlooking the Firth of Lorn. Was the stronghold of the MacDougals and a temporary prison of Flora MacDonald in 1746.

Near Dunbeg off A85 3 miles north of Oban.

Inveraray Castle

attractive 18th century castle built on site of earlier building. Home of Duke and Duchess of Argyll.

On A83 just outside Inveraray.

Kilchurn Castle. Ruins  set on the edge of Loch Awe. Kilchurn has a four-storey tower built in the mid 15th century by Sir Colin Campbell, 1st of Glenorchy. Much enlarged in 1693 it incorporates the first purpose built barracks in Scotland. Steamer takes passengers over to the castle. Takes about 10 minutes. Leaves from Loch Awe pier a mile west of Dalmally off A85.

Skipness Castle and Chapel. Dating back between 13-16c.

On B8001 Skipness Point overlooking Arran and Bute on coast of Kintyre.

Stirling Castle. Can't miss it - set on a rock above Stirling. It has a turbulent history as a military stronghold and was a favourite royal residence for three centuries. It is an outstanding example of medieval and Renaissance architecture.
