Castles in the Scottish Borders

Hermitage Castle where Mary Queen of Scots rode to see her lover, The Earl of Bothwell  in 1566 (a 50 mile horse ride from Jedburgh). The arduous journey resulted in a near fatal fever for her. "Would that I had died at Jedburgh," she was to remark on the eve of  her execution.
